How to Remake a Screenshot Set for a Different Device (iPhone to iPad, Duo, Mac)

TL;DR

Duplicate asks for a target device, orientation or custom size, then re-flows the layout in proportion, rebuilds the device frames for the new device, and carries over only the parts you tick. Screenshots inside frames are off by default across device families.

The problem

You finished a polished iPhone set, and now the App Store wants iPad screenshots, or a Mac set, or a Duo set. They’re different shapes, so simply scaling would crop or stretch your design. Starting from scratch means re-doing the copy, the backgrounds and the fonts you already settled.

What Duplicate does

On the project list, Duplicate doesn’t just copy. It asks for a target device, orientation or custom size and re-targets the design:

  • Positions map proportionally (which page, and where on the page).
  • Sizes scale by the smaller ratio so nothing overflows.
  • Text boxes keep their relative width and shrink with the scale, so lines fold less, not more.
  • Device frames are rebuilt for the new device (an iPhone bezel becomes an iPad bezel), and the new device fits the old placeholder box.

You tick what to bring: the whole project, layout and device frames, caption text (or only the style with the words cleared), backgrounds, fonts, languages and preview videos.

Steps

  1. On the project list, choose Duplicate on the finished project.
  2. Pick the target device and orientation, or a custom size.
  3. Tick what to carry over. Un-tick screenshots if you’re crossing device families.
  4. Open the new project, then drop in captures from the new device. See batch import.
  5. Fix whatever the re-flow didn’t get quite right.

Tips

  • Keep the captions, change the screenshots. The copy is what you worked hardest on.
  • Check every page. Re-flow gets you 80% there; wide devices like iPad or Mac may want bigger devices and fewer words.
  • Use it for iPhone Duo. Its inner screen is almost iPad-shaped, so a 6.9” design can’t just be scaled. Duplicate to the Duo canvases instead.

FAQ

What can I carry over? The whole project, layout and device frames, caption text (or only its style), backgrounds, fonts, languages and preview videos.

Why are screenshots not carried between device families by default? An iPhone screenshot inside an iPad frame is just a cropped iPhone screenshot. You’ll want fresh iPad captures.

Does the page count change? No. The same number of pages carries over.
