Life Reel Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-09-02
Life Reel was previously published as AgeScanner. The app, and this policy, are the same product under a new name; the page address keeps the old slug so existing links continue to work.
Overview
Life Reel builds a time-lapse of one person from the photos already on your device: it groups your library by face, orders that person’s photos by apparent age, aligns them on the eyes and cross-dissolves them into a video. It also carries three small extras — How Old?, Look-Alike and Mom or Dad? — built on the same face reading, just for fun. All of it runs on your device. There is no account, and your photos and the face data derived from them never leave your iPhone. This policy explains what the app accesses, exactly how face data is handled, and the choices you have.
Face Data
Because Life Reel works on faces, this section states our handling of face data plainly. Some jurisdictions treat face measurements as biometric or otherwise sensitive personal data, so we treat them that way regardless of where you are.
What is created. When you pick a photo, take one in the app, or let Life Reel scan your library, the app locates the faces in each photo and derives, for each face:
- its position and eye landmarks within that photo, plus head pose and a sharpness score;
- a guess, in years, at how old the face looks;
- a face embedding — a short list of numbers describing what the face looks like, used only to judge whether two faces belong to the same person.
Where it is created. Face detection uses Apple’s on-device Vision framework. The age guess and the embedding come from Core ML models bundled inside the app binary. Every one of these steps runs on your device’s own chip. No photo, no cropped face, and no embedding is ever uploaded — not to us, not to anyone else. Put the phone in airplane mode and scanning, age guessing, comparison and reel building all behave exactly the same; that is the simplest way to check this claim rather than take it.
What it is used for. Face data is used only to deliver the features you asked for: ordering and aligning the photos in a Life Reel, grouping photos of the same person inside your own library, showing a for-fun guess at how old a face looks, and producing the Look-Alike and Mom or Dad? resemblance scores.
What it is never used for.
- Life Reel does not identify anyone. It never matches a face against any external database, any public source, any other user’s library, or any name or identity record. Grouping happens only among the photos already on your device, and every group is an unnamed guess until you name it yourself.
- Face data is never used for identity verification, age verification, access control, security screening, surveillance, employment, lending, insurance, or any other decision affecting a person’s rights, safety or entitlements. The app is for personal, recreational use only.
- Face data is never used for advertising, profiling, or personalisation of any kind.
- Face data is never used to train or improve any machine-learning model. The bundled models are fixed; your photos and the embeddings derived from them are never fed back into them, by us or by anyone else.
- Face data is never sold, rented, or disclosed to any third party.
How long it is kept. Face records, embeddings and person groupings stay in the app’s own on-device database until you remove them. “Erase all results” in the You tab deletes every face record, embedding and person group the app has derived from your library. Deleting the app removes all of it along with the app’s caches. Nothing is retained anywhere else, because no server of ours ever receives any of it.
Data We Collect
Life Reel has no account system and builds no profile of you. It requests only the device permissions it needs:
- Photo Library access — to read the photos you allow it to see, so it can find faces, group photos of the same person, order them by apparent age, and build a Life Reel. Limited (“Selected Photos”) access is fully supported; the app only ever sees the photos you picked. Every photo is analysed on this device and is never uploaded.
- Photo Library add access — used only when you choose to save an exported reel or a result card back to your camera roll.
- Camera access — used only when you choose to take a photo inside the app instead of picking one. The photo is analysed on this device like any other, and the app does not record video or run a live face feed.
The app has no login, no advertising SDK, and no cross-app or cross-site tracking. It does not read your contacts, location, microphone, calendar, or health data.
The Sample Reel
Before any scan, the Home tab can play a short sample reel so you can see what the app does without granting anything. It is built entirely from illustration art bundled inside the app, it is the same for every install, and it is labelled as a sample rather than your photos. It reads nothing from your library, writes nothing to the app’s database, and is shown to everyone — there is no version of the app in which it appears for one audience and not another.
How We Use Data
- Detect faces and guess, for fun, how old each one looks — on device.
- Compare faces to each other to group photos of the same person, and to produce the Look-Alike and Mom or Dad? resemblance scores.
- Assemble one person’s photos into a Life Reel video and render share cards.
Data Storage
- Your photos stay in your Photos library. Life Reel reads them in place and does not copy them elsewhere.
- Scan results — face positions, age guesses, embeddings and person groupings — are stored in the app’s own on-device database, which no server of ours can reach.
- Small cropped face thumbnails are written to the app’s cache directory so screens redraw quickly. “Clear face cache” in the You tab removes them at any time.
- Exported reels are written to a temporary file so you can share or save them; they reach your Photos library only if you choose to save them.
- Nothing is stored on our servers: we operate none for photos, faces, embeddings, or scan results.
Sharing
Life Reel does not sell or share your data. A photo, card, or clip leaves the app only when you explicitly share, export, or save it using the iOS share sheet.
Network Activity and Third-Party Services
Life Reel contains no advertising SDK and no third-party analytics or attribution SDK. Its network activity is limited to the two things below, and neither one involves your photos, faces, embeddings, or scan results:
- Apple (StoreKit / App Store) — when you buy, restore, or renew Life Reel Pro. Those transactions are handled entirely by Apple; we never see your payment details.
- rate.mzjpg.com — our own rating and feedback service — used only by the in-app rating prompt and the Feedback form. It fetches that prompt’s configuration, and sends anonymous prompt counts (which prompt was shown, which button was tapped, plus app version and language) that carry no identifier for you or your device. If you submit the Feedback form, it sends what you typed along with your device model, iOS version, app version and language — plus your email address and any screenshots only if you choose to add them. Feedback is used to reply to you and fix bugs, nothing else, and using the form is entirely optional.
Accuracy and Limits
An age read off a face is a guess about how a face looks, made for fun; it typically lands a few years either side of the truth, and lighting, angle and expression all move it. It says nothing about how old a person actually is. Resemblance scores are relative measures, not statements of biological relationship. Face grouping also makes mistakes, especially across childhood, which is why people can be renamed, merged and hidden by hand. Life Reel is not an identity or age verification tool and must not be used as one.
Photos of Other People
Your library contains other people’s faces. You are responsible for the photos you analyse: by using the app you confirm that you have the right to use them, and that analysing the faces in them — and sharing any card or clip you export — is lawful where you are and respects the wishes of the people depicted. All of that analysis stays on your device, and anyone you would rather the app not keep can be hidden or deleted at any time.
Your Choices
- Grant, limit, or revoke photo library and camera access at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Clear the face cache, or erase all scan results — every face record, embedding and person group — from the You tab at any time.
- Rename, merge, hide, or delete any person the app has grouped.
- Delete the app to remove all of its on-device data at once.
- Decline the rating prompt and skip the Feedback form; the app then makes no network requests other than Apple’s own purchase handling.
Children’s Privacy
Life Reel is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children. Photos of children in your own library are processed on your device, under your control, on the same terms as every other photo, and the face data derived from them is never uploaded.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Updates will be reflected by the “Last updated” date at the top of this page.
