How to Find the Biggest Files on Your Mac and See Where Space Went
Large Files sorts your biggest files by size, and the disk visualizer maps where space went so you can drill into folders instead of guessing. Both are free.
Large Files: the fast answer
One list, sorted by size. A forgotten disk image, an old video export or a leftover installer shows up at the top. Delete what you don’t need, or move it to an external drive.
Disk visualizer: the “why” answer
The map shows how your space is divided. Big blocks are big folders. Click into one to see what’s inside it, and keep going until you find the culprit. It’s useful when the big thing isn’t one file but ten thousand small ones.
A sensible order
- Look at the visualizer to find the heavy folders.
- Use Large Files to pick off individual items.
- Run the other categories for the safe, rebuildable stuff.
Access
Spotless can only see what you let it see. The direct download uses Full Disk Access, granted once. The App Store version asks for folders through a standard macOS panel, and some protected folders need their own grant. You can review or revoke access in Settings at any time.
FAQ
Is the disk visualizer free? Yes. Scanning, the disk visualizer and the system overview are free and unlimited. Removing files needs an unlock.
Does it show me files outside my home folder? The direct download can see system-level locations once you grant Full Disk Access. The App Store version covers the folders you grant it, normally your home folder.
