Spotless: Mac App Store vs. Direct Download — Which Should You Get?

TL;DR

The direct download runs outside the macOS sandbox and can clean system caches, empty the Trash and fully uninstall apps. The App Store version is sandboxed, so it cannot, but Apple handles billing and updates. The shared core of scanning, duplicates, similar photos and large files is the same.

Apple requires every Mac App Store app to run in a sandbox. The sandbox is a good thing for security, but it closes off part of a disk cleaner’s job. So Spotless ships in two forms.

What both versions do

Rule-based junk cleaning, the disk usage map, duplicates, similar photos, large files, developer clutter under ~/Library/Developer, browser privacy cleaning, and free unlimited scanning.

What only the direct download does

  • Cleans system-wide caches in /Library/Caches
  • Empties the Trash
  • Deletes the app itself when you uninstall, after an administrator prompt
  • Removes root-owned leftovers such as launch daemons and privileged helpers
  • Cleans Xcode Simulator runtimes
  • Runs system maintenance actions like rebuilding the LaunchServices database
  • Manages system-wide login items
  • Shows fan speed, temperature and GPU usage, and lists running processes

The App Store version hides these features instead of offering them and failing.

Which one

Direct download if you want everything, prefer paying once, or you’re a developer cleaning a really full Mac.

App Store if you want Apple to handle billing and updates, or your clutter is mostly in your home folder.

See license keys and seats for the direct-download details.

FAQ

Can I install both? Yes. They are separate apps as far as macOS is concerned, so you can compare.

Does a purchase in one version unlock the other? No. An App Store subscription won’t unlock the direct download, and a license key won’t unlock the App Store build.

Why can’t the App Store version empty the Trash? macOS does not let a sandboxed app reach the Trash, and no permission you can grant changes that.
