Sky Colours, Day and Night Themes and Keeping the Screen Awake

TL;DR

SpeedTrace colours itself from the sun's angle at your location: dawn, midday, dusk or night. Settings let you choose the appearance, keep the screen awake and pick colour palettes (Pro). HUD mode uses full brightness for windshield reflections.

The problem

A speedometer bright enough for noon is blinding at midnight, and a dim one vanishes in sun. A fixed “dark mode” ignores whether it’s dusk in Reykjavik or noon in Singapore.

Sky-aware colour

The whole app is coloured by the sky outside: dawn, midday, dusk, night, calculated from the sun’s elevation at your last known position. It deliberately lingers in the golden colours until the light is really blue, and fades after twilight ends, so it matches what you see out of the window.

Settings

Settings → Display:

  • Keep Screen Awake: the screen doesn’t lock while the speedometer is open.
  • Appearance: follow the system or choose light or dark.
  • Animate Speed Digits: rolling digits between readings; turn off for a steadier look.

Dial Colors (Pro) recolour supported dials. App Icon (Pro) offers alternates.

Night driving

Use a dark appearance, lower the phone’s brightness, and consider HUD mode (Pro) for a windscreen reflection that doesn’t need you to look down.

Tips

  • A mounted phone on a charger plus Keep Screen Awake is the standard setup.
  • If the colours look wrong, check location permission; with no fix ever recorded the app can’t place the sun.

FAQ

How does it know the time of day? It calculates the sun’s elevation from your location and the date, not from the clock, so it is right in any time zone and at any latitude.

Can I force dark or light? Yes. Settings → Display → Appearance.

Are colour palettes free? No. Dial colours and alternate app icons are Pro.

Does Keep Screen Awake drain the battery? Yes, the screen is the biggest consumer. Plug in when the phone is mounted.
