How to Keep Your Speed on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island
Recording a trip starts a Live Activity with live speed on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island. Updates are throttled and every state carries an expiry, so a frozen card is never shown as live after the app is terminated. There is no separate home-screen widget.
The problem
Your phone is locked or you’re in another app, and you want to know how fast you’re going without waking it. A stale number on the Lock Screen is worse than none, because it looks live.
Steps
- Start a trip.
- Lock the phone or switch apps. A Live Activity shows live speed and trip information on the Lock Screen, and compact speed in the Dynamic Island on supported iPhones.
- Stop the trip, and the activity ends.
Why it can be trusted
Updates are throttled to stay within iOS’s budget for frequent updates. Every update also carries a stale date, so if iOS suspends and then terminates the app mid-trip, the card won’t go on presenting minutes-old numbers as live. Any leftover card is ended the next time the app opens.
What it isn’t
There is no separate home-screen widget at the moment; the Live Activity is the glanceable surface. For continuous use, open the app or HUD mode (Pro).
Turn it off
Disable Live Activities for SpeedTrace in iOS Settings, or simply don’t record.
Tips
- Live Activities need to be allowed for the app in iOS.
- Treat the card as a glance, not an instrument.
FAQ
When does the Live Activity appear? While a trip is being recorded.
Is it free? Yes.
Is there a home-screen widget? No. The widget extension currently provides the Live Activity only.
Why might numbers freeze? If iOS suspends the app, the card stops updating. Each update carries an expiry, and leftover cards are ended at next launch.
