Is SpeedTrace Private? No Account, No Ads, iCloud Sync and the Speed-Limit Lookup
SpeedTrace has no servers, accounts, ads or analytics. Trips and routes are stored on your device and sync through your private iCloud. The only network request the app itself makes is the optional OpenStreetMap speed-limit lookup. Purchases are handled by Apple.
The problem
A speedometer and trip logger knows where you live, where you work and how you drive. Apps in this space often collect it, share it with insurers or show ads based on it.
What stays private
- Trips, routes and speed history are stored on your device with SwiftData.
- If you’re signed in to iCloud, they sync through your private iCloud database to your other devices. We can’t read it.
- No account, no ads, no analytics, no tracking.
What touches the network
| What | When |
|---|---|
| Speed-limit lookup (OpenStreetMap Overpass) | Only if you turn Show Speed Limit on; sends your current coordinate |
| Map tiles | Apple Maps, as in any map view |
| Purchases | Apple (App Store) |
With the speed-limit feature off, the app makes no network requests of its own.
Permissions
- Location While Using: speedometer and map.
- Location Always: only if you enable Background Tracking.
- Motion & Fitness: only if you enable automatic trip detection, to tell a car from a bike or train.
Your controls
Delete trips from the list, switch off iCloud for the app in iOS Settings, and disable Background Tracking any time.
Diagnostics
Settings → Diagnostics can show live GPS accuracy and record a CSV log on your device; it is off by default and only shared if you choose.
FAQ
Does SpeedTrace track me? No. There is no analytics and no account. Trips stay on your device and your own iCloud.
What network requests are made? Only the optional speed-limit lookup (your coordinate to OpenStreetMap) while that feature is on. Map tiles are provided by Apple Maps, and purchases by the App Store.
Is iCloud sync optional? Trips are synced through your private iCloud when you are signed in; you can turn iCloud off for the app in iOS Settings.
Why Always location? Only for Background Tracking, to keep recording with the screen off.
