What Fitness, Fatigue and Form Mean — and How to Read Your Training Load
TL;DR
Fitness is what you have built up over weeks, Fatigue is what you are carrying right now, and Form is the gap between them. Use it with weekly volume and VO₂ Max, resting heart rate and HRV trends.
The three lines
- Fitness: a slow-moving measure of recent training.
- Fatigue: a faster-moving measure of the last few days.
- Form: fitness minus fatigue. Fresh, building or overreaching.
Practical use
Before a race, you want Form to rise. In a hard block, it will dip. If it stays very low for weeks, back off.
Other trends
Weekly volume, pace trend (faster is up), records, and VO₂ Max, resting heart rate and HRV against three months ago.
FAQ
What is a good Form? A positive form means you are fresh; deeply negative means you are carrying a lot of fatigue. Use it as a prompt to adjust, not as a verdict.
