How to Add or Correct the Location on a Photo (Set Location)
Set Location shows the photo's current GPS (and full EXIF on request) with a map whose centre pin you drag. Latitude and longitude fields stay in sync, and the new coordinate is written losslessly and saved to Photos or the library.
The problem
A scanned print has no location, a camera without GPS didn’t record one, or your phone tagged a photo with the wrong place. In your Photos map and in albums sorted by place, these pictures are missing or in the wrong country.
What Set Location does
The screen shows:
- The photo with its current location (and an info button for the full metadata).
- A map with a centred pin. Drag the map to move the pin.
- Latitude and longitude fields that stay in sync with the map.
When you save, the new coordinate is written into a copy of the photo without re-compressing it, and saved to Photos or the app library.
Steps
- Open Set Location and choose a photo.
- Pan the map until the pin is where the photo was taken, or type coordinates.
- Save. The tagged copy appears in Photos.
Use it for
- Scanned family photos: tag where the picture was taken.
- Photos from non-GPS cameras.
- Correcting a location the phone got wrong.
Cautions
- You’re writing a location into a file. Be sure it’s truthful when you share it, and don’t use it to mislead.
- Share carefully. Adding a location to a photo makes it easier for others to see where it was taken. If privacy matters, use Hide Location instead.
FAQ
Is the image re-compressed? No. The coordinate is written losslessly.
Can I type coordinates? Yes. Latitude and longitude fields stay in sync with the map pin.
Does it change the original? It saves a new copy to Photos; the original isn’t modified.
