Demo Mode: Film Yourself Over Slides, Videos, PDFs and Web Pages

TL;DR

Demo Mode (Pro) puts content behind you and films with one camera in the corner. Choose photos (optionally auto-advancing), a video (mute and loop), a PDF, Markdown or text file, or a web page. A live web page is captured as periodic snapshots, so animated pages may update slowly.

The problem

You want to talk through something that’s on a screen: a slide deck, a PDF, a clip, a website. A normal screen recording shows the screen without you. Filming a screen with a second phone is awkward and reflective. Recording your voice and your face and the content separately and combining them is an editing job.

What Demo Mode does

It composes your camera in the corner over content that DualCam shows behind you, like a screen recording with you in it. You pick one of these backgrounds:

  • Photos: a slideshow you advance yourself with on-screen arrows, with optional auto-advance.
  • Video: play, pause and restart it yourself while recording; mute and loop options.
  • A file: a PDF, Markdown or text file. Scroll and pinch to zoom as you record.
  • A web page: browse a live page inside DualCam.

You control the content while the camera records, and tap to stop.

Steps

  1. From Home, open Demo Mode (a Pro feature).
  2. Choose the type of background and select your content.
  3. Set up the camera bubble in a corner that doesn’t hide the content.
  4. Record, scrolling, zooming or paging as you talk.
  5. Stop and preview.

Things to know

  • Not a screen recorder. Only content opened inside DualCam is recorded. You can’t capture another app.
  • Web pages are snapshots. The page is grabbed periodically, so animation and video on a page can look choppy. For smooth video, use the Video background.
  • One camera. Demo Mode works on any supported iPhone.
  • Plan your path. Open the page and set the zoom before you start.

Good uses

App walkthroughs, product demos, lecture recaps, slide talks and tutorials.

FAQ

What can I put behind me? A photo slideshow, a video, a PDF, a Markdown or text file, or a live web page.

Does it record my screen or other apps? No. It records the content you load into DualCam, composed with your camera. It isn’t a system-wide screen recorder.

Why does my web page look choppy? A live page is captured as periodic snapshots, so animated pages update slowly.

Does it need two cameras? No. It uses a single camera, so it works on any supported iPhone.
