I Deleted Photos but My iPhone Storage Didn't Change: Recently Deleted Explained

TL;DR

iOS moves deleted photos and videos to Recently Deleted for 30 days, and they keep using space until that album is emptied or the 30 days run out. After a cleanup, check Recently Deleted, make sure nothing in it needs recovering, then delete it for good.

The problem

You spent half an hour cleaning, watched the app say “2.4 GB freed”, opened Settings → Storage and the bar hasn’t moved. Did the cleanup fail?

No. It did what iOS does: it moved the items to Recently Deleted, where they stay for 30 days and still count against your storage.

Why iOS does this

It’s a safety net. If you delete the wrong photo, you have a month to bring it back. Swipe Clean uses the standard iOS deletion on purpose, so you also get iOS’s confirmation prompt, and a mistake isn’t permanent. The app itself says “Deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days, so you can always recover them.”

How to actually get the space back

  1. Finish your cleanup in Swipe Clean.
  2. Open the Photos app → Albums → Recently Deleted.
  3. Look through it. This is your last chance to recover anything.
  4. Tap Select, then Delete All (or select the items you’re sure about) and confirm.
  5. Check Settings → Storage again. It can take a moment to update.

Same for videos

When you compress a video, the compressed copy is added and the original stays until you delete it. After you delete the original it also goes to Recently Deleted. The same step frees the space.

A safe routine

  • Clean first, then empty. Don’t empty Recently Deleted until you’ve looked over what’s in it.
  • Don’t panic about the 30 days. If you’re not short on space, just let it expire.
  • If you’re really short on space, empty it straight away.

One caution

Once you delete from Recently Deleted, the photos are gone from this device. If you use iCloud Photos, deleting also removes them from your other devices, so be sure before you do it.

FAQ

How long do deleted photos stay? 30 days in Recently Deleted, after which iOS removes them.

Why is that a good thing? Because it lets you recover a photo you deleted by mistake.

How do I free the space right now? Open Photos → Albums → Recently Deleted, choose Select, then Delete All, once you’re sure nothing in it matters.

Does Swipe Clean delete permanently? No. It uses the normal iOS deletion, so photos go to Recently Deleted first.
