How to Turn Voice Notes into Text on iPhone Without Uploading Them

TL;DR

Tap record, speak, stop. SpeakSense saves the note with a generated title and transcribes it with Apple's on-device speech engine; you can watch the text appear live or transcribe afterwards. Recording and transcription are free and unlimited. It needs iOS 26.

The problem

Ideas come at bad moments: in the car, on a walk, between meetings. Typing them out is slow and voice memos pile up unlistened, because you can’t search audio. Many transcription apps solve it by uploading your recordings to a server, which is not what you want for a private thought or a work conversation.

Steps

  1. Open SpeakSense and allow microphone access.
  2. Tap the record button. The level meter tells you whether you’re being picked up (“Picking up sound clearly”).
  3. Speak. If live transcription is on, the text appears as you talk; you can switch it off and transcribe afterwards.
  4. Tap stop. The recording is saved with a generated title, in the category you used last. Change the title format in Settings.
  5. Open the note to read, edit, copy or share the transcript.

Why it can work offline

Transcription uses Apple’s on-device speech engine. The language models are installed and managed by iOS, so after the first time you use a language, it works without a connection. The first transcription in a language may ask iOS to download that language.

Tips

  • Hold the phone 15–30 cm from your mouth; a quiet room helps more than anything.
  • Say numbers and names slowly. You can fix them afterwards: the transcript is editable.
  • If you didn’t turn on live transcription, open the note and tap Transcribe this recording.

Requirements and limits

SpeakSense needs iOS 26 or later. Accuracy depends on audio quality, accent and background noise, so check anything important.

FAQ

Does it need internet? No, once iOS has installed the language you use. Transcription then runs in airplane mode.

What iOS version does it need? iOS 26 or later, because it uses Apple’s on-device SpeechAnalyzer.

Is there a limit on recording or transcription? No. Recording and transcription are free and unlimited. Premium adds translation and a few extras.

Is my audio sent anywhere? No. Audio and transcripts stay on the device unless you share them.
