How to Trim a Ringtone to the Perfect Length (Under 30 Seconds)
Select the clip, use the Trim tool and drag the ends on the waveform; turn on snapping (0.1, 0.5 or 1 second) for clean cuts. Keep the final length under 30 seconds for the iOS 26 share sheet; the project can't export if the total passes 40 seconds.
The problem
A ringtone that’s 3 seconds too long is rejected by the share sheet. One that’s cut mid-word sounds broken. On a phone screen, nudging a clip by a fraction of a second is fiddly.
The tools
- Trim: drag a clip’s ends; the waveform shows what stays.
- Split: cut the clip at the playhead.
- Move: slide a clip along the timeline.
- Delete: remove the selected piece.
- Zoom the timeline for fine work.
- Snap: aligns drags to the interval you choose (Settings → Editing → Snap interval: 0.1 s, 0.5 s or 1 s). A haptic tap tells you when it snaps; haptics can be turned off.
Steps
- Tap a clip to select it, choose Trim, and drag the ends.
- Play from the start to check the entry.
- Check the total length shown in the editor.
- Fine-tune with a higher zoom and a smaller snap interval.
Length rules
| Where you use it | Limit |
|---|---|
| iOS 26 Use as Ringtone (share sheet) | shorter than 30 s |
| GarageBand route | export up to 40 s |
| Mac sync (.m4r) | 40 s or shorter |
| The app itself | won’t export over 40 s; it tells you to trim |
Tips
- End on a natural beat or a short fade-out.
- If you need a repeat, duplicate the clip in a second lane (extra tracks are Pro).
