How to Download a Video from a Web Page in Chrome (and When It Won't Work)

TL;DR

The extension lists video elements and their source files as a plain URL you can preview and download. It works for pages that serve an .mp4 or .webm directly. It cannot save blob: streams, HLS/DASH playlists or DRM video, which covers most big streaming sites.

The problem

You want a copy of a short clip from a page you have the right to keep: a product demo from your own CMS, a training video your company hosts, a screen recording on a forum. The page has a Play button and nothing else. There’s no download option, and “Save video as” is often missing from the right-click menu.

What the extension looks for

On the Videos tab it lists:

  • every <video> element’s own src;
  • every <source> inside a video element;
  • the video’s poster image, used as the thumbnail when there is one.

Each entry shows a name, its address and, when you open details, its type and file size (asked with a small HEAD request).

Steps

  1. Open the page and, if the video loads on click, press Play once.
  2. Click the extension icon and open Videos.
  3. Click a thumbnail to play it inside the extension and confirm it’s the right file.
  4. Tick it and press the download button.

When you see nothing, or something that fails

  • Empty Videos tab. The player may be built in JavaScript and inserted after the scan, or inside an iframe (iframes are not scanned). Play the video, press Refresh, and try again. If it’s an iframe, open the iframe’s address in its own tab and scan there.
  • The address starts with blob:. The page assembled the video from pieces in memory. No file exists to download.
  • Streaming sites. YouTube, Netflix, TikTok, Twitch, Vimeo’s private players and similar use segmented streaming or DRM. The extension does not capture network traffic, merge segments, or remove protection, and it never will here. Use the site’s own offline feature if it has one.
  • Hotlink protection. A few sites only serve the file with their own referrer; the download then fails.

Good uses

Your own hosted content, creative-commons clips, public-domain archives, and material you’ve been given permission to keep. Copying other people’s videos without permission may break the site’s terms or copyright law.

Privacy

Everything happens in the browser. The video’s address goes from the page to the extension, and from the extension to Chrome’s download manager. Nothing is sent to our servers.

FAQ

Can it download YouTube, Netflix or TikTok videos? No. Those sites stream segmented or protected video through blob: URLs, playlists and DRM. The extension reads the page’s video elements; it does not intercept network streams or bypass protection.

Which pages does it work on? Pages whose

Why do I see a video entry that fails? If the entry’s URL begins with blob:, the page is streaming. There is no file to fetch.

Is video download free? Yes.
