How to Translate Text Offline on iPhone, Even in Airplane Mode
LingoAI keeps a full translation model (about 1.2 GB) on your phone, so translating works with no connection. It is the default engine, and the app never silently falls back to the cloud. The free plan handles texts up to 2,048 characters (and about 500 tokens).
The problem
Translation apps assume you have a connection. Then you land in another country without data, walk into a basement restaurant, or sit on a plane, and the translator is useless exactly when you need it. Offline packs from other apps are often small, limited to a few languages, or need downloading in advance, and people forget.
How LingoAI works offline
The translation model is inside the app (about 1.2 GB), so there’s nothing extra to download and no account to create. By default it translates on the phone. Two on-device engines are available:
- LingoAI Model (default): the larger model, best for longer sentences and idioms.
- System: Apple’s built-in translator, near-instant for short phrases. It may need a one-time language download in iOS settings.
If one on-device engine can’t handle a language pair or fails to load, the app tries the other. It never falls back to the cloud.
Steps
- Open LingoAI and choose the source and target languages. Turn on language auto-detect if you like; it works from the text you’ve typed.
- Type, paste or dictate your text.
- Read the translation. Copy it, share it or have it read aloud.
- Try it once in airplane mode before you travel, so you know it works.
Free-plan limits
- 2,048 characters per translation, and about 500 tokens, whichever you hit first.
- For longer texts, Long Text (a separate unlock) or Pro removes the limit. The Cloud engine has its own, much higher limit but uses credits.
Tips
- Short, clear sentences translate best. Split long, complicated ones.
- Check names, numbers and dates. Every machine translation can slip on these.
- Pick the engine to match the job. See choosing an engine.
- Free-plan note: the free version shows ads, which need a connection to load; translation does not.
FAQ
Does it need internet? No. The default LingoAI Model runs fully on the device, and so does the System engine. Only the optional Cloud engine needs a connection.
How big is the app? Large, because the whole translation model is inside the app. Nothing more has to be downloaded.
How long can a text be on the free plan? Up to 2,048 characters and roughly 500 tokens. Long Text (or Pro) removes that limit for on-device translation.
Will it ever send my text to a server without asking? No. An on-device engine that fails never falls back to the cloud. Cloud is used only when you choose it.
