How to Shoot Faster with the Volume Shutter and Quick Action
Long-press the app icon to open straight into the camera, then press a volume button to shoot. It's faster and steadier one-handed, and GPS still refreshes as the camera opens.
The problem
Documentation photos are rarely taken in comfortable conditions. You’re on a ladder with one hand free. You’re wearing gloves, and the on-screen shutter is small and misses taps. You’re walking, and a stab at the screen shakes the shot. Or you’re trying to catch something that’ll be gone in ten seconds, and you spend them unlocking the phone and navigating to the camera.
What speeds things up
Two small features:
- The quick action. Long-press the GeoCam icon on the Home Screen and pick the camera action. You land directly in the camera, skipping the dashboard.
- The volume-key shutter. Press a volume button to shoot. A physical button is easy to find without looking, works with gloves on, and moves the phone less than a touch on glass.
How to do it
- Long-press the icon, choose the camera action.
- Frame the shot. GPS refreshes as the camera opens.
- Press a volume button.
- Look at the preview of the saved photo only when you have a moment.
What to watch for
- Give GPS a second. If you shoot in the very first instant, the position can still be rough. A beat of patience helps when the location matters.
- Don’t fire blind in a hurry. Check at least once that the stamp sits where you expect.
- Gloves. Physical buttons are more reliable than a touchscreen in the cold, but gloves vary, so test first.
- Pair with a saved template so your first photo is already in the right layout. See templates.
